Exploring Theatrical Elements in the Works of Louisa May Alcott
Dr. Deb Ryals, Professor, English and Communications
During my sabbatical, I focused on verifying the sources for a book I am writing that examined the theatrical influences in the writings of Louisa May Alcott. Alcott, best known for Little Women, had a strong connection to the theater, and this project explored how she incorporated theatrical elements into her narratives. By analyzing her use of dramatic structure, theatrical elements such as "plays within a play," tableaux vivants, and staging within her stories, I uncovered how Alcott’s engagement with theater shaped her literary works and added depth to her storytelling. This sabbatical provided insights into the intersection of literature and theater in Alcott’s body of work, sharing key findings and excerpts from my research by confirming the research I had done for the book.
